The days are hot and steamy, fields of tasseled corn extend for miles, the Fourth of July is but a fond memory and back-to-school sales have begun to appear in stores - all signs that summer is slowly winding down, but before it is over there is one more grand event to partake in - the Houston County Fair, this week, from Aug. 18 to 22, in Caledonia.

Exchange student continues relationship with host family
Forty years after spending a semester in Harmony as a foreign exchange student, Juan Carlos Fontecilla of Chile remembers his experiences and the wonderful times he shared with classmates and his host family. Returning to celebrate the Fourth of July with his American family and his classmates from the Harmony High School Class of 1970, Fontecilla said he has never forgotten the kindnesses shown to him nor the lessons he learned while living in the United States.

Fillmore County arrives at 'Destination Relay!'
We have arrived at destination Relay! We fully intend to cruise into the Relay event with the wind at our back, the top down, and the tunes turned up. We invite all of you to join us and help us celebrate a world with less cancer and more birthdays! That's the theme of this year's Relay for Life - set for Friday, July 30 - and celebrate is what we'll be doing.

WWII Army nurse remembered as 'Angel of Bataan'
Maxine Russell's book "Jungle Angel: Bataan Remembered," is an account of McKay's grueling experiences as a lieutenant-colonel in the United States Army Nurse Corps during World War II in the Philippines. McKay was remembered, recently, with a special memorial service on what would have been her 100th birthday. A special ceremony was held at the Richland Prairie Church in rural Harmony, where she is buried.
