After sweltering the previous Tuesday, it was a chilly Aug. 17 season finale for the Canton Men's Softball League. While this is the first year for Denise Case as the head coach of the Fillmore Central volleyball team, it is not the first year in the volleyball program. | Defending SEC champion M-C ready to repeat volleyball success |
During a 31 to 4 season, the Mabel-Canton volleyball team won the conference for the 12th consecutive year and surpassed 30 victories for the second straight season. The Cougars took 80 of the 95 sets they played. Coach Lonnie Morken was quoted at the end of the season as saying, "I know most observers thought we would be a couple of notches down based on our graduation losses." When the 2009 season came to an end, the Mabel-Canton Cougars found themselves in a three-way tie for third place. But that was not the heartbreaker of the season. What was hard to accept was how the four defeats were lost. All five wins were decisive; the four losses were excruciating as they all went down to the wire with margins of 1, 4, 2 and 7 points.
