Fillmore Central Board gets ready for a referendum - and the start of 2010-11 year
Members of the Fillmore Central School Board convened on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the new elementary school meeting room in Preston - remodeled from the former middle school media center - for their last meeting before school begins Sept. 7. Every board member was in attendance other than Jim Love.

Area schools open next Tuesday
Most area schools will be starting after the Labor Day weekend holiday, on Tuesday, Sept. 7. So area drivers will want to keep their eyes open for the smaller students unfamiliar with the whole process of walking or riding a bike to school, as well the older students who may be inattentive.

Former Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Douglas Amdahl, once of Mabel, dies at age 91
Douglas K. Amdahl was one of Minnesota's most respected Supreme Court justices and served as chief justice from 1981 to 1989, overseeing a period of major change in the state court system.

City of Harmony pursues mosquito control options
The city of Harmony will be doing demonstration mosquito control with two separate applications in the coming weeks. Mosquito Control of Iowa will be working with the city to treat breeding areas and other parts of the community with the first application to take place sometime between Thursday, Aug 26, to Sunday, Aug 29. The second application will take place about eight days following the first.

Regional tourism organization celebrates 25th anniversary
Members of the Historic Bluff Country organization gathered Monday evening for a special celebration in honor of its 25th anniversary. This local convention and visitor's bureau has helped promote attractions, lodging facilities and local businesses throughout southeastern Minnesota since 1985. Staff members and volunteers have worked together with the local communities to make tourism one of the largest industries in the region.

Older, wiser pupils return to O'Hara School full of memories
In the days when they were students at the O'Hara School - District 29 in Amherst Township, located off what's now known as Fillmore County Road No. 19 - the students typically walked around 1 mile to attend class at the one-room building.

Fillmore Central looks at new custodian; referendum promotion
The Fillmore Central School Board, scheduled to meet at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 24 was expected to have hired Brett Bushman as the building and grounds director. The agenda for the meeting stated he started in that position Aug. 9 (The meeting was held after the press deadline for this newspaper; watch for full coverage next week.) It also was expected that a finalized list of new custodial hires would be ready.

Dobie Days returns for fourth year in Harmony
This weekend the southeast part of Harmony will be rocking with excitement as four bands take the stage during the fourth annual Dobie Days, held Friday and Saturday. Add in mud volleyball and mud bogging, a poker run and free camping and you get one of the area's largest outdoor music festivals.

Pasture walk held near Canton focuses on extending grazing season, avoiding summer slump
A total of 33 people gathered at Vance and Bonnie Haugen's Springside Farm on Aug. 17 for a Great River Graziers pasture walk made possible through the University of Wisconsin Extension.
