Area schools open next Tuesday
Most area schools will be starting after the Labor Day weekend holiday, on Tuesday, Sept. 7. So area drivers will want to keep their eyes open for the smaller students unfamiliar with the whole process of walking or riding a bike to school, as well the older students who may be inattentive.

Fillmore Central Board gets ready for a referendum - and the start of 2010-11 year
Members of the Fillmore Central School Board convened on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at the new elementary school meeting room in Preston - remodeled from the former middle school media center - for their last meeting before school begins Sept. 7. Every board member was in attendance other than Jim Love.

Summer reading program completed
Congratulations to all of the successful summer readers. A total of 157 young people registered to read in Preston Public Library's "Make a Splash" program.

Little ones in the Cuddle Me group logged 504 days of being read to. Kids in the Read-To-Me group enjoyed a total of 1,904 books. Readers read an all-time record high of 69,480 minutes. In addition, teens read 42,776 pages, which is a record high since 2003.

Dam decision getting close; Lanesboro sets tax abatement hearing
Contacted Aug. 31, city clerk-Administrator Bobbie Vickerman of Lanesboro said the city is still waiting to receive word back on a funding application to the USDA for repair work on the Root River dam.

Regional tourism organization celebrates 25th anniversary
Members of the Historic Bluff Country organization gathered Monday evening for a special celebration in honor of its 25th anniversary. This local convention and visitor's bureau has helped promote attractions, lodging facilities and local businesses throughout southeastern Minnesota since 1985. Staff members and volunteers have worked together with the local communities to make tourism one of the largest industries in the region.

County's elected officials make salary requests
Fillmore County elected officials appeared individually before the county board during its Aug. 24 meeting. Two of the three expressed their dissatisfaction with having to be put in such a position before the board: it was time for the annual elected official salary request.

Older, wiser pupils return to O'Hara School full of memories
In the days when they were students at the O'Hara School - District 29 in Amherst Township, located off what's now known as Fillmore County Road No. 19 - the students typically walked around 1 mile to attend class at the one-room building.

History of O'Hara shared, plus restoration plans
The O'Hara Public School No. 29 - long since moved from its country location off Fillmore County Road No. 19 - shares its history these days from its vantage point near an entrance at the Fillmore County Fairgrounds in Preston.

Its history is shared in a booklet compiled by Gloria Bergey and Elaine Johnson for the all-school reunion held Aug. 21. Gloria, whose maiden name is Garness, grew up on the farm close to it and still has family on that farm today.

Rattle, rattle: What do I do?!?
EDITOR'S NOTE: This is the final of a three-part series on timber rattlesnakes.

Sally Gehrke, who lives east of Whalan along the Root River, recently heard the rattle and found a rattlesnake in her yard.

She contacted law enforcement and then DNR (Department of Natural Resources) officials, not knowing what to do about the snake at that time. After Sally was asked to keep an eye on the snake, it slithered away as she had to do another task.
